ITHACA FARMERS’ MARKET WEEKLY UPDATE
September 20, 2008

Farmers' Market Peddlers Update...Last Saturday was the 10th Annual Ride For Life, the largest fundraising event that STAP (Southern Tier AIDS Program) holds each year. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all of you at our market who have supported our participation in this great community event. Our team this year was comprised of 8 riders, 3 of us directly connected to the market...Paul Tracy (Sacred Seed), Rachel Ostland (Solas) and Steve Sierigk (Acorn Designs) with others being Jerry Feist, Jack Vanderzee, Megan Gregory, Warren Rabin and Andy Larkin. Weather was near perfect for cycling. This is our third year with an organized market team and I must say that we are recognized and appreciated for being there not only by STAP but by the community at large...it certainly takes a lot of effort and planning to do this event but it is really worth it! Our T-Shirt has been a real big hit this year and we have sold most of our first run and will be reprinting sometime soon... many of you wanted sizes that we had sold out of so come looking again perhaps in October. Many thanks again to Jan Norman (Silk Oak) as she has generously donated the printing of these not only this year but since we started our fundraising. Financial totals are still coming in but it looks like we have topped our best year fundraising as we are already at $7500 raised with more pledged money still coming in.

I really do appreciate your excitement about and support of the Ride each year! I keep an e-mail list for interested riders to let them know about any planning etc that goes on with our team and fundraising etc. If you know of anyone that would like to join us in the future send them my way steve@acorndesigns.org or 387- 3424

Thanks Again...Steve Sierigk for The Market Peddlers

ITHACA FARMERS’ MARKET WEEKLY UPDATE
August 9, 2008
Wedding Today

The Events Committee wishes to thank all the vendors and our market manager who helped make the Blueberry Festival possible last weekend. A Special thanks goes to the vendors who donated prizes for the Marble Jar, which was out both Sat. & Sun. and received a HUGE amount of guesses.
In case you’re curious: 2949 marbles, closest guesses were 2932, 2932 (yeah, really, the same number guessed twice), and 2910.
Thanks especially to the vendors who kindly displayed scavenger hunt items in their stalls with good humor and gave blueberries to the kids; they seemed to have a great time looking for blue stuff. Next time we’ll better coordinate the number of blue glass flower vases and blue toenails!
And from everyone at market, THANKS SUSAN-for making a great Blueberry Festival!

IT’S ROTARY HARVEST TIME!
The Ithaca ROTARY CLUB and the Ithaca City School District are collaborating, once again, with vendors at the Ithaca Farmers’ Market to provide fresh fruits, vegetables, and products for five families in the area.
The goal is to provide fresh produce for pre-K families who participate in the school meal program, which is not in service for these three weeks.
Starting Saturday, August 16th, and running for the following two weeks, Rotarian Heidi Goldstein of the Organic Farm and Rotarian Carol Travis, will pick up products starting at 8:30AM.
All donations are greatly appreciated! With a limited budget we can also reimburse for some products.
Since home deliveries must be made by noon, we do need to collect early.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR GENEROSITY AND PARTICIPATION.
If you have any questions, please see Heidi, at booth #61.

It’s time to start thinking about running for the board! I’ve attached Candidacy Statement for those that are interested.

FOR SALE Ford Aerostar All Wheel Drive Minivan - extended body. New front brakes, inspected, air works great, automatic trans, low mileage (107 K) for a 15 year old. Some rust, no back seats. Great for hauling lots of stuff or for winter rat - great in snow!!!!. See Amy Hnatko in booth #40

Cooperative Extension and Ithaca Farmers’ Market Harvest Sampler
On August 16th Cooperative Extension is promoting a two day farm tour and we are hosting the dinner at market from 6-9 PM.
After the tour, participants are invited to enjoy a sampling of foods from Ithaca Farmers’ Market vendors.
I’m looking for food donations, in exchange for work hours or payment. No volunteers yet?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! We need more food!

ITHACA FARMERS’ MARKET WEEKLY UPDATE
July 27,2008
Wedding Next Saturday
Artist’s Market Tomorrow

The Farmers' Market Peddlers are putting together ads for their T-Shirt fundraiser. This is the Market "Team" that represents us in the annual Ride for Life, a major community fundraising event for STAP (Southern Tier AIDS Program). This is a great way for market to interface with the community. We are asking for Farmers' Market vendors to take out ads on the shirt (recommended donation is $50). The shirt is our major team fundraiser this year as each rider commits to raising $500 for STAP. I have approached many of you personally about the ads... so this is a reminder to anyone who I might not have spoken with. We will be closing the ad space by the end of July so we have plenty of time to print and market the shirts which become another part of our fundraising.

By the way I have some shirts left over from last years ride (mainly larger sizes) which I have been selling from my booth....these are $15 and again all proceed go to STAP. So far we have 7 confirmed riders... market vendors involved are Rachel Ostland (Solaz), Cheryl Barton (Bellwether), and me, Steve Sierigk (Acorn Designs). A few more are on the fence but it is a big commitment...date of the Ride is Sept 13. If anyone knows of any shortcuts around Cayuga Lake please let me know!

Thanks all of you have who have helped us in the past and thank you in advance for your support this year!
Any questions?...Steve Sierigk, “The Commissioner!” Booth #11 (Acorn Designs)

From Sustainability-To all Vendors
For the most part our compost/ garbage/ recycling separation is going pretty well on the part of our customers. This is especially remarkable considering our stations are not staffed. This is a general call to help with the success of our program. Especially if you are situated near a compost station and notice customers looking befuddled as to where to place their waste this would be a great opportunity to do some education on behalf of the market. Many out of towners are unfamiliar with our systems and could use the help. I realize we are all busy with our sales but if it is at all possible please be aware that this education helps. A second request to all is that at the end of each day a few of us go out and collect all the recycling and garbage bins. Kristof and crew still does the work with the compost bins but we need a hand after each market centralizing, sorting recycling and garbage. ( By the way we generally have just over more that one bag of garbage each market so far!) This only takes a little time but we could use help especially as it is really nice to have a small crew do this job making it a bit more light-hearted. If you are interested in helping out with Sustainability this is a great time to step forward. We are also looking for new recruits for our Committee so become the change you want to see. Either can also go towards work hour requirements.

Especially for Food Vendors
One of the main problems we have noticed is that customers still find it hard to believe that the compostable cold beverage cups are compostable and some of these wind up in our recycling bins. You all could help us out with our end of the day clean-up and correctional sorting with some easy front line work. We know that you are busy trying to get customers served quickly but If you could give each customer a simple reminder " The cups we use are Compostable...when you are finished with your drink please deposit this in the compost container" this would perhaps help with some of the problem. This could go for all your service ware as sometimes customers don't realize that utensils are also compostable.

Thanks for All you Do!
Sincerely, Sustainability Committee
AG Vendors:Time to get you FMNP applications in, don’t forget!
See you Saturday!
